A Quote from the Grandmaster

While many martial arts tend to make their practitioners belligerent and aggressive, Tai Chi Chuan helps its adepts to become calm and composed. This comes about not through moralizing by instructors, but through the nature of Tai Chi Chuan practice itself. It is more suitable than most other martial arts for character development, as the very nature of its training, with its emphasis on gracefulness, gentleness, and harmonious energy flow, is intrinsic to the development of mental freshness and cosmic harmony.

— Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit

What is Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan)

Grandmaster Wong has helped us with the literal translation that enables us to understand what genuine Taijiquan really is.

  • ‘Taiji’ meaning ’The Cosmos’ and ‘Quan’ is the shortened term for ‘Quan Fa’. ‘Quan Fa’ meaning ‘Fist Techniques’. This tells us that ‘Taijiquan’ or ‘The Cosmos Fist Techniques’ is a martial art and not solely a gentle moving exercise. When we apply Taijiquan as a martial art this means that all students can begin to grasp the ‘genuine essence’ of the art at a much deeper level than that of Taiji (Tai Chi) gentle exercise.
  • Those who practicing Taiji only as a gentle exercise can experience basic health benefits like loose joints, relaxation and improved blood circulation. However it does not give practitioners the genuine deeper health benefits that are so longed for in everyday life, hence many practitioners miss the deeper benefits of this profound and wonderful art.
  • To get the best health benefits from Taijiquan we teach what we consider to be the best methods that have been passed down trough the centuries by the past masters. This means genuine Taijiquan is best taught as a martial art, thus giving practitioners get the best benefits from basic to advanced levels.

Wahnam Taijiquan is called so because the type of the way we teach it in our school.

  • The name of our School Wah-Nam is named after our Grandmaster’s two most influential Sifu’s (my Sitaigung’s), Sifu Lai Chin Wah and Sifu Ho Fatt Nam.
  • All instructors of our School are Shaolin Wahnam Instructors that teach what we believe to be genuine. Wahnam Taijiquan is taught in a specific way that we believe would best benefit practitioners to enhance their experience of genuine Taijiquan according to that of what was practiced by the great past masters.

The past Masters Three Levels of Attainment

  • The first level is to have good health, the second to be combat efficient and third to cultivate spirit.
  • Many practitioners of today are mostly peaceful and happy which is an indicator of spiritual cultivation, but few only ever reach the level of cultivation than that of the past masters.
  • Energy flow is essential for student progress as it brings good health, vitality and longevity. It is also essential for building internal force enhancing the student experience.
  • Practicing externally only begets minimal benefits, whereas regular training on the internal level broadens the practitioners benefits for health, longevity, combat efficiency, mind and spiritual cultivation.

For Health, Vitality, Combat Application and Spiritual Cultivation.

  • Even though it is a martial art, it still is practiced gracefully and with an internal gentleness that is very powerful. We use and apply the integrated methods to help overcome long & short term illness, to maintain good health, to energise and to invigorate personal energy, to learn self defence through combat application, to enhance sharpness of the mind, to find balance in life and to cultivate spirit.
  • Wahnam Taijiquan integrates Qigong (Chi Kung) from the start, this greatly benefits the students health, deepens internal and external Taijiquan practice, enhances mind clarity and cultivates spirit.
  • We genuinely believe that what we teach is genuine according to the past masters philosophy and methods and that the results from our students testimonies back up our claims.
